What is Pilates?

A system of Physical exercise created in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates to improve the overall health of the body and mid by developing a training module based upon core strength, flexibility and breath. Joseph Pilates believed that it was essential for the body to be balanced to be at optimal performance and all movement should come from the core or “powerhouse.” Pilates has benefits for a multitude of people, especially dancers some of which who have been known for taking Pilates alongside their dance training since its creation in the 1920’s. Pilates is the perfect accompaniment to any dancers training, encouraging proper alignment, and use of muscles, improved awareness of the body including breath and overall better application of dance technique. Pilates can be taken at any age when practiced safely with a knowledgeable Instructor.
